"Le samouraï" looks as abstract, yet as beautiful and as endlessly worthy of study, as the Giotto frescoes in the basilica in Assisi.
However, Le Samouraï’s emphasis on the (socially, culturally, geographically and temporally) anachronistic figure of the samurai in the modern day metropolis is not motivated by a desire to mock an outdated genre; just the opposite: it is an homage to the elegance and tragic beauty of the lonesome warrior type in all its incarnations (gangster, samurai, noir hero).

Schon dieser beschwingte Auftakt scheint recht untypisch für die Höllenszenerien, die die bisherigen Polizeidramen des Regisseurs kennzeichnen. Marchal ist einer der wichtigsten Filmemacher des aktuellen französischen Kinos, zumindest im Hinblick auf ein bestimmtes Genre: den Policier oder auch Polar (eine Wortneuschöpfung aus „Police“ und „Argot“, der Umgangssprache französischer Krimineller). Dieses Genre wiederum ist ein wesentlicher Teil der französischen Filmgeschichte überhaupt.
